Use Canva to Design Patient Education Handouts

Tool:Canva
AI Feature:Magic Write + Healthcare Templates
Time:10-15 minutes
Difficulty:Beginner

What This Does

Canva turns your AI-generated patient education text into professionally designed, visually engaging handouts that patients are more likely to read and keep.

Before You Start

  • You have a free Canva account (canva.com — free version works fine)
  • You have your handout text ready (can be from a free AI chatbot — see Level 1 prompt for psychoeducation handouts)
  • You're logged into Canva

Steps

1. Find the AI feature

Go to canva.com and click Create a design → search for "medical brochure" or "health flyer" in the search bar → select a Letter (8.5 x 11) template from the healthcare or medical category. Alternatively, start with a blank letter-size design.

2. Tell it what you need

Once your template is open, look for Magic Write in the left sidebar (it's under the "Apps" section or accessible via the + button). Paste your text into the design by clicking a text box and pasting, or use Magic Write to generate content by typing: "Write a brief section about [topic] for a hospital patient discharge handout."

For faster results, skip Magic Write and just paste your chatbot-generated text directly into the text boxes in your chosen template.

3. Review and use the result

Replace the template placeholder text with your patient-specific content. Change fonts and colors to match your hospital's brand if needed. Download as PDF → print or email to the patient.

Real Example

Scenario: You've used ChatGPT to create a discharge handout for a patient with congestive heart failure going home. The content is good but the plain text document doesn't look professional enough to hand to a patient.

What you do: Open Canva → search "medical handout" → select a clean two-column template → paste your chatbot-generated content into the text boxes → adjust section headers → download as PDF.

What you get: A clean, branded-looking one-page handout with icons, headers, and readable formatting — ready to print in 10 minutes. Patients are significantly more likely to read and keep visually designed materials.

Tips

  • Canva has specifically healthcare-themed templates — search "patient education" or "health information" for the most relevant starting points
  • Stick to one page — patients rarely read beyond that
  • For Spanish or other language versions, run the same design process with your translated text (from Level 1 translation prompt)
